Wiener Festwochen 2017
Grupo de Rua, Bruno Beltrão
Location: HALLE G
In the latest performance by the Brazilian star choreographer Bruno Beltrão, the dancers of the Grupo de Rua cover more than 4600 metres. As a plea for freedom of travel, the piece is moving the truest sense of the word. The tragic journeys of thousands of people force us to rethink closed borders. In a globalized world, where goods and profits are in constant flow across national boundaries, humans are prevented from doing the same. If everything is constantly on the move, what are “illegal” border crossings?
Intercontinental mass movements and the developmental history of cultures through the influence of migration are the raw material for this choreographic reflection – because, despite its actuality, this is not a new phenomenon in the history of humanity. In New Creation the dancers formulate and demand a right to safe and free motion and movement. Bruno Beltrão makes his company run through a nomadic movement experiment on a gigantic treadmill at 25 KPH – a balancing act between poetry and politics, and a choreography that never stays in the same place, that is constantly moving, changing its position, always in progress, generating new stories from infinite movement.
Born in Niterói, Brasil, in 1979, Bruno Beltrão has transformed the vocabulary of the urban – the gestures, movements, and rituals of street dance, break, and hip hop – into contemporary dance. In 1996, at the age of only 16, he founded the Grupo de Rua (Road Group) together with his breakdancer friends. Their movement vocabulary includes fast, dynamic changes, high jumps, kicks, and twists.
