Opening: Thu, Jun 22, 19:00
Venue: MQ ART BOX
Admission free

Next to the big museums, with their content and outreach programmes that are often accessible only with a ticket, the MQ ART BOX installations can be experienced en passant, so to speak.

Peter Sandbichler reacts to this pop-up setting by wrapping almost the entire volume of the interior space in cardboard: The rectangular prism measuring 840 x 334 x 505 cm which is made from 180 folded boxes floats around 70 cm above the ground, creating a sort of miniature counterpart to the large cuboids of the surrounding temples of art. By recycling low value packaging material the artist creates spatial sculptures with complex surfaces whose effects emerge from the interplay of light and shadow.

The title SHRINE refers to the intersection of imagination and truth, which serves as the point of orientation for the contemporary Economy of Attention*  n which less and less content is offered with more and more packaging.
* Georg Franck: Ökonomie der Aufmerksamkeit, 1998

Peter Sandbichler (*1964 in Tirol) initially studied painting in New York before gaining his diploma in Bruno Gironcoli’s masterclass at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1991. He then spent a year with Professor Peter Weibel at the Institute for New Media in Frankfurt. This was followed by periods abroad in Tokyo, Berlin, New York and Sri Lanka. Peter Sandbichler lives and works in Vienna. Alongside his sculptural work groups Tensegrities and Alte Schachteln Sandbichler is best known for his groups of works in the public realm. Most recently he designed the entire façade of a building at Mariahilferstraße 1 in Vienna. A further concrete relief with the dimensions of 22 x 14 metres adorns a building of the Chamber of Labour at Plösslgasse 2 in the 4th district.
