Although the comic opera Cublai, gran kan de’ Tartari by Giambattista Casti with music by Antonio Salieri is apparently set in Cathay, the situation it portrays is actually that of European royal courts, especially the court of the Russian tsar. The central question raised by the authors, in the true spirit of the Enlightenment in Europe, is how those in power deal with the responsibility they have for their lands.

It's often loud in the city, I prefer to be loud myself and sometimes I'm very quiet and watch the ducks.

By now, everybody agrees that it makes sense to have greenery in the city, because it cools and cleans the air while also being pleasant to look at. But this wasn’t always the consensus. Fifty years ago, Friedensreich Hundertwasser’s ideas were ridiculed. We take a look at some of the projects in the permanent collection at the Architekturzentrum Wien and then set off in search of green oases in Vienna by underground and on foot.
